How to measure ring size
If you’re in the process of looking for an engagement ring, wedding, eternity or even promise rings, getting the right ring size is one of the most important things you must do. With decades of experience in designing and crafting fine jewelry and specializing in engagement rings, this ring size guide comes from first-hand, extensive and practical knowledge.
There are multiple ways to measure your ring size. In this guide we are going to cover the most common ways that you can figure out your size at home or at a professional jeweler’s.
Different finger shapes
Different rings flatter different finger types.

Narrow knuckle wider base
Wide knuckle skinny base

Similar sized knuckle and base
Ring size gauge sets
If you take the time to visit a jewelry store to get your fingers measured, they will probably use a professional ring size gauge. It looks like a keyring of different sized rings. This set of master sizes is one of the most surefire ways to get an accurate measurement.

Try your model ring
Wear your future ring. In order to get an accurate measurement of your ring size, find the ring gauge that you can get on your finger but is difficult for someone else to pull off.
Tips
- Don’t take a size up/down just in case you may lose or gain weight.
- If the ring is loose once past your joint, it still may be the correct size. For example if your joint is wider than the bottom part of your finger.
- Make sure the chosen size isn’t painful when worn.
- Bear in mind that fingers expand in the heat and in the mornings.
- It’s recommended to wear your ring size gauge for up to 24 hours (overnight) to make sure it’s a comfortable fit. Having a professional ring size gauge at home is the best way to achieve this.
Ring size strips
One of the most popular tools for measuring your ring size at home is the low cost (sometimes free) ring sizer strips that wrap around your finger. While these tools may give a ballpark idea of your size, they will almost never provide an accurate reading. Saving a few dollars on this option will most likely result in at least some extra hassle and potentially extra resizing costs in the worst case.

Sizer strips. Low cost but not always accurate.
Why won’t this give me an accurate ring size?
1. When tightening the sizer, the ring size result will depend on how much you pull or leave it loose.
2. The tool doesn’t take into account the joint above the ring over which the ring needs to pass.
3. There is no way to gauge the comfort of a real ring.

Another low cost option is to use a printable measuring strip or a piece of string / floss. Similar to the above, however, this will give you a good direction, but not a guaranteed accurate size. With low cost rings, the printable guide below may be sufficient, but with a significant purchase like an engagement ring, it’s probably best to get it right.

Measure the size of a ring
If the ring you are about to purchase is for your significant other and it’s a total surprise, perhaps the only good way (other than inside information from a friend or family member) is to measure one of her rings. Simply print out the below guide and place a ring on the matching internal circle.

The print out must be to 100% scale, otherwise you’ll get the wrong measurements.

The ring should be a perfect circle on the inside. Make sure it’s a ring that is worn on the same finger! This method isn’t perfect, but if you’re surprising your partner, it’s the best option you’ve got.
